UnderTow tells the story of a man who starts a new life in a small coastal town, living in a motel, and working as a security guard. He meets a young single mother, and ends up marrying her. The movie is based on a true story of a young couple who were married because they were unable to have kids. The woman's parents wanted to start over and give their daughter a better life, so she gave up her dream of having a child to go to college. After the young woman married the father, she never wanted to get pregnant, so they got divorced. A year later the mother is killed in a tragic accident.
UnderTow does a good job of portraying the woman's point of view. She's the one who made the choices that ended up having tragic consequences. However, the father comes off as pretty shallow. He takes all the credit for the work his wife does, and the woman sees his actions as an abandonment. The mother doesn't trust him, and eventually leaves the town to live with her mom. The father ends up marrying someone else. He's a successful businessman, so it seems as if his new marriage gives him a purpose. He can take care of himself and a new wife, but the mother was still trying to take care of him. He doesn't recognize that he needs to take the same care of himself that his wife did.
This is a really sad movie. I feel for the woman in UnderTow, and I would have felt a lot worse for her if the circumstances had been reversed. I think a movie that follows this kind of story can really make you feel for a character, because it allows you to understand where she's coming from. UnderTow is an emotionally powerful movie. |
